Mom And Dad’s Great Move-In Adventure

August 30, 2021

It’s done!

My parents built a house next door to us, and after months of work, beaucoup decisions, many delays, life in an apartment, life in an extended-stay hotel, and a move on the hottest, most humid day of the year, they’re IN.

I couldn’t be happier, and my favorite husband feels the same.

Sorting, Arranging, & Chasing Rabbits

We’ve made fast progress getting everything settled. First things first, get the beds made, the kitchen and bathrooms organized, and clear a path through the whole house.

Next…arrange furniture, although not all of it is in yet (what’s with Covid messing up things like furniture and ovens?) and hang pictures and sort through stuff. You know how that goes—open one box of old pictures, and you’re down a whole different trail chasing fun memories.

And, did you know it’s much easier to throw someone else’s stuff away? Mom called me ruthless. I can own that.

More To Come

Since the driveway isn’t complete, Dad can’t set up his woodworking shop. So, that’s a bit of a bummer because he LOVES his tools. I think he’d be happy just sitting around with a half cup (always a half cup) of coffee, gazing serenely at his planers and saws and other equipment. I know we have given him umpteen million clamps. They make him happy too.

Mom just about has her studio set up, but that still has a ways to go, also. I can’t wait for her to start painting again. I think it will motivate me to paint more. All my time has been going to writing, and I miss playing in paints!

A Little Something For The New House

Our housewarming gift to them was a painting I did. I’ve had it in our entryway, but once their custom-made table and dining chairs were in, I knew it would be perfect for that area.

BIG shout-out to Blair Wrye for his beautiful woodwork on the table now called “The Dodson.” Blair’s so talented and my Dad, especially, adores this piece of fine craftsmanship.

Dad's empty workshop above and a little glimpse at the eating area to the left.

Three’s The Charm!

This is the third home they’ve built, and they say it’s their favorite. It is perfect for them. I think it turned out better than they even expected!

In upcoming posts, I’ll give you a peek inside and update you on the progress. It’s been a fun process, but I am glad they’re finally moved in.

Now I have the best neighbors on both sides of us AND across the street. What a blessing!
