I’m Embracing These Fall ’21 Trends, But Cutting Out Others

I’ve done a little digging around (read: surfed the net) about fashion trends for Fall 2021. I may be 61, but I still want to look up-to-date!

I love dabbling in a good trend. Key word: good.

I’m sure you’ve heard the old adage: “If you wore the trend once, skip it when it comes back in style.” Meaning: You’re too old to try this trend.

Hogwash.

Well, let me modify that…Hogwash a LOT of the time! Sometimes, you probably should skip a trend.

So, Are There Rules About This?

Not really.

Some women can pull off distressed denim in their 80s, while I don’t feel totally comfortable in extremely distressed jeans even in my 60s. A frayed hem is about as far as I go.

But that’s me. You may love this laid-back look. What’s important is your comfort level, because if you’re not comfortable, it will show.

That said, I’ve got to admit I sometimes see older women wearing fashions that make them look…for lack of a better word, desperate. Like they’re trying too hard to stay young.

You know?

These comfy, wide-legged linen pants paired with a long sleeveless sweater make a perfect fall transition outfit. I can change jewelry, add scarves, or wear dressier shoes to get a different vibe.

What’s Good For Me

What’s good? What works? I guess it’s a matter of opinion. But here’s what caught my eye as I was perusing the internet…

  1. Sweater vests—long, waist-fitting, cropped, button-up, v-neck, you name it. Vests are big. The ones I’m wearing above are from H&M.
  2. Patterns—leopard print (coats especially), plaid, checks, houndstooth, Nordic, artsy, dark floral on dark background. Coordinating top and bottoms.
  3. Vibrant colors—especially green (every shade from olive to kelly), orange, bright blue, marigold yellow. Saturated colors of fall. With two exceptions—lavender and pink are big, too.
  4. Loose-fitting pants—mom, dad, boyfriend, wide-leg, flare
  5. Chunky—thicker heels and platforms, clogs, quilted and puffy purses, and big gold chains

What’s Not So Good For Me

These things caught my eye, too, but for a different reason. They are trends you will NOT see me:

A "cut out" like this top features. I never really embraced the cold shoulder trend, which was the precursor to cut outs all over the body. No kidding...ALL over the body. Instead of peek-a-boo, it's peek-a-BOO. As in, it's a look that might be a little scary on me.
Don't misunderstand...I love overalls, but I'm not going to be wearing them. Too much trouble! I bought a jumpsuit that I adore, but I don't wear it because I'm too lazy. I mean, who has time to undress whenever they need to go to the bathroom?
Again, I think this look is beautiful and classy. And HOT! I may be the only woman in history to suffer with hot flashes forever. I would absolutely roast in head-to-toe knitwear outfits. Plus, I'm not wearing Spanx anymore, and knitwear is a little clingy
Whether you call it a midriff or cropped top, you won't find it in my closet. Here's the thing, if the head-to-toe knit is too hot, this is too cold. Why would I want my stomach sticking out in the winter? Why would I want my stomach sticking out at all?!

    Your blog talked right to me today! Love your clothes. Wish you could pick mine out for me. Where is H&M? I like their look a lot.
    Also no way you can be 61. You certainly don’t look your age. Time sure flys! Of course our kids are in their 50’s. No way, it seems like we just got married.

      Hey! I think the same thing… no way I’m 61!! We have an H&M in our mall, but I do most of my shopping with them on line. Check them out!

    I love the looks you are showing for you. … classy and comfortable! Comfort is key for me anymore… I immediately started thinking mentally if I am wearing anything that makes me look “ desperate “! 🤣
