Festive (Simple and Inexpensive) Fourth of July Goodies for Grandkids

Our grandsons (and their parents!) are visiting us the week of the 4th. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it, but I AM SO EXCITED!

I like to give them a little something special when we spend time together. I’ll bet if you’re a grandparent, you’re the same. I try not to overdo it–I mean how many outfits, toys, and books can they reasonably use?

That said, ChiChis and Pops of all sorts get to do a little spoiling, if you know what I mean. 😉

I had the best time strolling the aisles of The Dollar Tree a few days ago. I went into full-on Patriotic Grandmother mode. If it was red, white, or blue, I was on it!

I ended up with the cutest baskets that I’ll give them when they come–a little welcome gift they can use during their visit. The girls are going to get their goodies at the end of July, when we see them next. I figure they won’t care that the 4th has already passed when they get theirs. The baskets are chockful of fun any day of the year!

My first find were these great plastic baskets (they come in blue, too!). The kids will be able to use them to carry toys to the pool or beach after all the goodies in them have been used.

Then I went on the hunt for anything red, white, and/or blue. Of course, sparklers were a no-brainer. And I found all sorts of snacks dressed in the right colors–especially love the Cracker Jacks! I also ran across these cute sip-and-snack bottles. I couldn’t find these exact ones, but I found something I think is even nicer on Amazon. Just click on the picture of the bottles and it will take you there!

Oh, my gosh, I enjoyed this way too much. Have you seen all the stuff at Dollar Tree lately?

I mean, who knew there were patriotic fairy wings? I don’t know why the Fourth of July screams, “I need fairy wings,” but it does…for some people. I was able to pass on those. But I did succumb to the headbands, complete with glitter and streamers. For the girls. I didn’t think the boys would appreciate them.

A few other items that aren’t your traditional July 4th items made the cut, too. I thought they’d be fun to have for our week of celebrating…

  • A big ol’ fan for cooling off in the July heat that’s inevitably humid in western Kentucky!
  • A wooden star that we’ll decorate sometime during the week. (See my last post for an art project you can do with your grands!)
  • A fun pen and a little notebook to use on their drive home.
  • Red soap paint that I know they’ll love using in the little pool we inflate for them. (We have a neighbor who generously invites us to use their full-size pool, and the kids love it. But, surprisingly, they adore this little pool, too!)

Let the fun begin!

I’ve got a lot more ideas about what we’re going to do all week. There will be running, splashing, and balls involved. And, you’d better believe we’re going to grill hotdogs and hamburgers, eat watermelon, devour a huge cookie decorated with blueberries and strawberries, catch fireflies, look for the fox family that lives behind us, and watch fireworks. We’re doing ALL the Fourth of July things!

Because, after all, this country is worth celebrating. With all its flaws, we’re still “the land of the free.” And I want my grandkids to know about all the good parts of America.  Don’t you?
